During the late 60s, The Peanuts became the most widely read comic strip in American history. The inoffensive, easily digestible, and uncontroversial nature of the comic strip largely contributed to its success.

However, from '66-'69 we see Snoopy, depicted as the Flying Ace, often pursuing or being pursued by the Red Baron.  One thing that Americans could largely agree on during this time period was that Red was the enemy.

Snoopy as the Flying Ace became a vehicle for Charles Schultz's musing on the war.

Like many iconic symbols in pop culture, people tend to use widely known images or characters to appropriate communicate their view points or feelings.

Snoopy as The Flying Ace became one of the most significant pieces of Americans' Vietnam War iconography.
