The Denver Larks, founded in 1967 by James Trindle, were originally part of the American Basketball Association. That same year, the Larks were sold off to Denver business man Bill Ringsby, who renamed the team the Rockets after the long-haul semis used in his trucking business.

This custom design of owner Bill Ringsby trucking company logo, used as the original Denver Rockets logo from 1968-1971 in the ABA.

The team's first year on the court (1967-68) had to be considered a successful one, especially attendance-wise. Unlike other ABA teams, Denver started out very slow at the gate. Only 2,748 fans attended the Rockets' first home game against the Anaheim Amigos. Attendance picked up over the course of the season, as Denver residents gradually warmed up to their new pro team. In their inaugural season, the Rockets averaged a healthy 4,128 fans per game. This figure encouraged the Ringsbys and confirmed that Denver could, indeed, support a pro basketball franchise, which would eventually birth the Denver Nuggets we know today.

Before the start of the 1974 season, in anticipation of moving into the NBA, the Rockets were renamed the Denver Nuggets, as “Rockets” was already in use by Houston
