"Christ. Seven years of college down the drain. Might as well join the fucking Peace Corps."
We explored the iconic typeface largely associated with the college athletic aesthetic. The typeface was born from Arthur Carl Stahl in 1932 Detroit. The Great Depression took everything from AC and he found himself working for a beanie manufacturer which gave him experience with felt lettering.
He began a lettering business 1932 and catered to professional and college sports teams providing screen printing, hand sewn lettering, and embroidery. Misspellings lead to AC developing the standard block type and allowed clients to order by the letter so he could avoid spelling errors.
Pre-made lettering meant that for a long time, a fairly standard lettering style got used for school and college sports jerseys—and in time for other varsity apparel as well, and eventually got associated with college aesthetic.
