This weekend I found myself, once again, at the Coachella Valley Music Festival in Indio, California. At 11 years and running, the festival itself has amplified into one of the largest musical gathering in the world, showcasing one of the most musically comprehensive line-ups imaginable. Two years ago, the event expanded from a two to three day show, turning the festival from a weekend jaunt in the sun, to a committed harmonious extravaganza that proves to be most physically draining, but incredibly satisfying.
This year the headliners totally exemplified what I mean by a ‘comprehensive’ line up. Jay-Z, who headlined Friday night, had been rumored to be joined by special guest Dr. Dre. Dre unfortunately was a no show, but was sufficed by an all too fabulous Beyonce, whose performance of Forever Young was equally fantastic. Fever Ray also headlined Friday night, offering one of the most awesomely ethereal musical experiences I have ever had.
Saturday night was a riot, with Devo at the Mojave tent, and Tiesto headlining on the main stage. Now, I think we’ve all tasted a little Tiesto at some point throughout our lives, but seriously guys, the dude can bring it. Sunday, the festival was closed out with the Gorillaz, who were like some extra loud disco cartoon show and turned out to just be redicuously fun to watch. Headliners aside, we all come to Coachella to see somebody, and for me this year, there were two in particular: The Xx and Thom Yorke, both alone made the 18 hour drive from Denver absolutely worth it.
The final day of Coachella is always a melancholy day, as we skip from set to set catching the bands and artists we want to see, but in the back of our minds we know the weekend is almost over and soon we must venture back to our tent or condo or hotel room to pack our bags and make our way home… wherever that may be. In my case, I’m headed home to Denver, back to replenish and recover.
